January - '98
- 1 - The 17th Annual Bud Light Hangover Classic 10K
and 5K Road Races will be run at 11:00 AM on January 1, 1998 at the Winner's
Circle Sports Bar, Route 110 (near Rte. 95), Salisbury, MA. Cash and merchandise awards,
tri-colored long sleeve tee-shirts or sweatshirts, classic beer mugs, raffles and more.
Participate in "A New Years Day Tradition". Early Bird Special
Application: Enter by October 8, 1997 for special raffle to be drawn at the
Winner's Circle Running Club October 9th meeting. Organized by WCRC. For more information

- 8 - The January WCRC club meeting, 6:30PM at the Circle.
- 18 - The 5th Annual Newburyport Rotary
Frigid Fiver 5 mile road race will be held on Sunday, January 18, 1998. 1PM
start at the Bresnahan School, 333 High St., Newburyport, MA. Long sleeve T-shirts. Inside
(guaranteed to be warm) pre-race registration and post-race food and awards. Assisted by

February - '98
- 7 - The WCRC annual meeting, election of 1998 WCRC officers, and winter party.
6:30PM upstairs at the Circle.
- 12 - The February WCRC club meeting will not be held since the annual meeting is
only 5 days earlier. The usual Thursday run and social will still occur of course.
March - '98
- 1 - Applications to the Mt. Washington Road Race will be sent out on March
1st. You must send a request for an application, including a S.A.S.E., to Mt
Washington Road Race, P.O. Box 990, Newport, NH, 03773. Send your request for an
application in early February!
- 12 - The March WCRC club meeting, 6:30PM at the Circle.
- 28 - The 17th annual spring classic April Fool's
Four-Mile Road Race will be held on Saturday, March 28, 1998. 11AM start at the
Winner's Circle Sports Bar, Rte. 110, Salisbury, MA. Walkers welcome. Cash and merchandise
awards, team awards, raffles. Portion of the proceeds to benefit the Jimmy Fund. Organized
by WCRC.
April - '98
- 9 - The April WCRC club meeting, 6:30PM at the Circle.
- 20 - WCRC is once again organizing a bus
trip to the Boston Marathon. The bus will provide transportation from the
Circle to Hopkinton, from Hopkinton to Boston (spectators only on this leg, Rosie), and
from Boston back to the Circle. Space is limited so don't miss the bus!
May - '98
- 13 - The 9th annual Run
for the Roses 5K Women's Road Race and non-competitive walk will be held on
Wednesday, May 13, 1998. 6:30 PM start at the Winner's Circle Sports Bar, Route 110,
Salisbury, MA. This is the first race in the 1998 "Twilight Tetrad" women's
series. Custom T-shirts to first 200 entrants, a rose to all finishers. Overall, age group
and team awards. All proceeds to benefit the Women's Crisis Center (Newburyport, MA) and A
Safe Place Inc. (Portsmouth, NH). Organized by WCRC. For more information contact Susie

- 14 - The May WCRC club meeting, 6:30PM at the Circle.
- 21 - The WCRC Annual Biathlon (WCRC Members Only)
Thursday, May 21, 1998 at 5:15PM - Bike 10 Miles, Run 3.1 Miles. The start is on Old Elm
Street off of Rabbit Road (the starting lines of the Hangover, April Fools, Roses, ...
races) near the Winner's Circle Sports Bar in Salisbury, MA. For more information call

June - '98
- 5 - The 6th Annual Parker River National Wildlife Refuge
Race Against Extinction 10K Road Race & 4 Mile Walk will be run at 6:25 PM on
Friday, June 5, 1998 at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, Plum Island, Newbury,
MA. Come enjoy a spring evening sunset run on the most scenic course in New England!!! A
flat, fast, breathtaking course. Assisted by WCRC. For more information call Bob Randall

- 11 - The June WCRC club meeting, 6:30PM at the Circle.
- 20 - The 38th Annual
Mount Washington Road Race will be held on Saturday, June 20. 10 AM start at the
Mt. Washington Auto Road entrance near Pinkham Notch (Gorham, NH). Entry is by lottery ONLY,
and the lottery was held March 16. If you didn't apply already it is too late. This is a
one-of-a-kind race with a great post-race party at the base of the mountain. If you're not
in the race, join the action anyway by volunteering to help at the WCRC water stop (each
club is responsible for one of the water stops on the way up), or volunteer to be a driver
on the mountain (we have to provide our own transportation down). WCRC always sends a large contingent to "The
Mountain", including the record holding men's and women's
masters teams.
July - '98
- 2 - The annual Heart-Beat Five-Mile Road Race/Walk, will
be run in Amesbury, MA, on Thursday, July 2, at 6:30PM. Start/finish and post race party
at The Mill Restaurant. To benefit the Amesbury High Scool Cross-Country Team. Assisted by

- 9 - The July WCRC club meeting, 6:30PM at the Circle.
August - '98
- 2 - The 8th annual Newburyport Yankee Homecoming High
Street Mile one mile road race will be run on Sunday, August 2, 1998. "The
way racing used to be." 10AM start at Atkinson Common in Newburyport, MA. Fast/flat
USATF certified straight line course. Separate start times based on age division and sex.

- 7 - The Merrimac Old Home Days 2 Mile Road
Race, fitness walk and 1/2 mile fun run (ages 1-8) will be run on Friday,
August 7, 1998. 6:15 PM start on Church Street in Merrimac, MA. Sponsored by Economy
Co-Operative Bank & Journeay Insurance Agency. Pre-registration $0 (What ... free???
Yes! Check it out).
- 13 - The August WCRC club meeting, 6:30PM at the Circle.
September - '98
- 7 - Around Cape Ann 25K, 9:00 AM, OMaley School, Gloucester, (508)
283-0470, Teams formed race day. (in WCRC Grand Prix Series).
- 10 - The September WCRC club meeting, 6:30PM at the Circle.
- 13 - WCRC End of Summer Sunset Reggae Cruise. (WCRC Members Only).
5:30-8:30 PM (board at 5:00) on the Captain's Lady II out of Plum Island Point. $22 per
person includes boat, food, reggae band. Cash bar. Reservations required, contact Bob

- 17 - WCRC Club Biathlon. (WCRC Members Only) 5:15PM at the circle. 10M
bike, 5K run, sign-up prior to race. Contact Allie at 978-465-2228.
- 19 - Fred Brown Lake Winnipesaukee Relay. Weirs Beach, NH.
- 24 - Annual WCRC members versus GDA students cross-country dual meet at Governor
Dummer Academy, Byfield, MA. 4:00 PM start on GDA 5K cross-country course. FREE (WCRC

- 27 - The 16th Annual Yankee Runner Short Race. 5K cross-country race
at Governor Dummer Academy, Byfield MA. USATF-NE Cross-Country Grand Prix Series. 10AM

October - '98
- 4 - 9th Apple Harvest 5 Mile Run. 12:30PM start (fun run at
12:00PM) on Batchelder Street in West Newbury, MA. Assisted by WCRC. For more information

- 8 - The October WCRC club meeting, 6:30PM at the Circle.
- 11 - The 12th Annual Bobby Bell 5 Mile Road Race, 11AM, Lasting Room,

and age category only, no men/womens divisions.
- 24 - 3rd Trick or Treat Trot 5K Road Race. 2 PM start at Newburyport
High School, Newburyport, MA. To Benefit NHS Class of 2000 and Local Charities. Organized
by Newburyport High School Class of 2000. Assisted by WCRC. For more information contact

November - '98
- 7 - The 10th annual Bruce Ellis Memorial 5K Road Race
will be run on Saturday, November 7, 1998 in Exeter, New Hampshire. Unique 5K course over
roads and maintained trails. T-shirts to first 200 registrants. Great age-group awards and
raffle prizes. Post race clinic with Olympic medalist Lynn Jennings! All proceeds
to benefit the Bruce Ellis Memorial Scholarship Fund. Organized by WCRC. For additional

- 12 - The November WCRC club meeting, 6:30PM at the Circle.
- 26 - The 9th Annual Turkey Trot 3.1 Mile X-Country
Run/Walk will be held on November 26, 1998 at 8:20 AM in Maudslay State Park,
Newburyport, MA. Enjoy Hassle-free, Traffic-Free Running in one of Massachusettss
most picturesque State Parks! Organized by WCRC. For more information contact John

December - '98
- 6 - The Mill Cities Relay.
The Club Championship of the Merrimac Valley. Relay team race open to invited "mill
cities" clubs only (including WCRC, the '94 and '95 club trophy winner). For more
information contact Mike McCormick at 978-462-0117. All WCRC club members are encouraged
to participate. There is no limit to the number of WCRC relay teams. EVERYONE has a good
time!
- 10 - The December WCRC club meeting, 6:30PM at the Circle.
- 13 - The Santa's Toy Trot 2 Mile, 4 Mile and 6 Mile
Road Races Plus Non-Competitive Walk and 1/2 Mile SANTA'S ELVES FUN RUN for
Kids will be held on Sunday, December 13, 1998. 1:00 PM start in Merrimac, MA. Proceeds to
Benefit TOYS FOR TOTS and HOLIDAY HELPERS. 1st 100 entrants in road race or walk receive
long sleeve T-shirts. Age group awards plus raffles. Organized by WCRC. For more

- 18 - The Annual WCRC Christmas party will be held on Friday evening,
December 18, at the Hungry Traveler restaurant in Salisbury, MA. $12.50/person (???),
